A five ingredient, delicious almond orange smoothie that uses in-season citrus. It’s simple yet packed with flavor and nutrients.

Almond orange smoothie. A great dairy-free, breakfast smoothie.

Simple can be a very good thing. Last year, when I traveled around the world for 5 months I traveled with one suitcase full of clothes. One! Yet back at home (err, I guess in my storage unit) I have a massive wardrobe full of clothes – many of which are business suits and fancy dancy clothes from my exec days. Umm, needless to say, I don’t have a huge use for those now as I sit here in yoga pants as I type this post!

Given my temporary living situation at my parent’s house (to care for my dad), it makes you realize how little you really need in life. Food, shelter, love, your health…yep, that’s about it. And when it comes to health and nutrition we can get really complicated or we can strip it all the way back down.

So that’s what I doing today with this smoothie. A simple, healthy, nutritious breakfast smoothie that you can make in a snap with ingredients you most likely already have in your pantry and fridge. Oh sure, I love unique, superfoods ingredients, like spirulina, hemp hearts and bee pollen – and I do put them in my smoothies all the time. But just like my old Louboutin high heels (ugh, they were gorgeous!)…there’s a time and a place for everything.

To eat healthy, don’t feel like you need those superfood ingredients all the time. A back-to-basics approach works juuusst fine, like on this almond orange smoothie. Five ingredients and a blender and 30 seconds later you’ve got a great breakfast smoothie, packed with vitamins, minerals and protein.

I use almond butter for the protein, but feel free to use cashew butter or your fave nut butter. I also add a cup of water, just to cut down on the sugar, but feel free to replace that with more oranges, if you’d like. And I grabbed both navel and cara cara oranges, but you could use any variety of oranges. It’s all very adaptable…and all very simple. Which is a good thing!

Enjoy!

  3. This is SOOOO simple! And absolutely refreshing. Makes me feel healthy with a burst of vitamin C AND protein (from the nut butter). We’re a peanut butter household, so I really love how versatile this smoothie is with the option to choose!5 stars

  4. Orange and almond is such a delicious combination, but I hadn’t tried it before in a smoothie- it’s my new favourite! So refreshing!5 stars

  5. ONE suitcase?! You are a true packing inspiration – I can’t even go away for a weekend trip without at least 2 suitcases and a large travel purse, HAHAHA. Have you ever seen the movie Troop Beverly Hills? That’s how I pack – I like being over-prepared ;) But I really do admire your words on simplicity, especially when it comes to this nutritious, delicious smoothie. And I hope your dad continues to heal – he’s lucky to have your care.

    1. Oh, I pack like that most of the time, trust me! Except for when I have to lug stuff around the world for 5 months – haha. ;) And thanks for your kind words about my dad! xo
