Avocado dressing is deliciously creamy and perfect to drizzle on all your salads, macro bowls and nourish bowls. I love it on my Southwest Chicken Salad, but it’s really quite versatile. It’s also easy to make!

A creamy avocado dressing that's perfect for all your healthy salad recipes.

Avocado Salad Dressing

I put avocados on my salads 95% of the time. The healthy fats of the avocados increase the nutrient absorption from all the greens. So it’s great from a nutrition standpoint. But let’s be honest, I also do it because avocados just taste darn good.

But sometimes I’ll be in the mood for an avocado dressing rather than eating slices or chunks of avocado on my salad. And if you’ve got a mini food processor or Vitamix’s 8-oz Containers for your blender, this recipe couldn’t be easier to whip up. And bonus, the avocado dressing magically covers each piece of your salad with a little avocado goodness.

What Ingredients are in Avocado Dressing?

My avocado dressing includes avocados, olive oil, water, cilantro (or other herbs), lime juice, garlic, salt and pepper. It’s similar in flavor to guacamole, but is more pourable and can be drizzled on salads, macro bowls or nourish bowls.

How do you Make Avocado Dressing?

To make the avocado dressing add all of the ingredients to a food processor (a small mini processor is best) or to the 8-oz Containers if you have a Vitamix blender. Then, pulse or blend until you have a nice, creamy consistency. That’s it! If you’d like to make your dressing thinner, just add a little more water. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 avocado
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup water, or more for thinner consistency
  • 1/4 cup cilantro, basil or parsley leaves
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 1-2 garlic clove, minced
  • salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Add all of the ingredients to a food processor. Blend until creamy and feel free to add more water for a thinner consistency.

Lisa's Tips

  • Yield: approximately 1 cup
  • You can store the avocado salad dressing in a airtight storage container for up to 5 days in the fridge.
  • Depending on the herbs you used the avocado dressing may have a slightly bitter taste. You can always balance that with 1-2 teaspoons of sweetener.
  • Also, if using cilantro make sure to only use the leaves as the stems are what impart that more bitter flavor.

  1. I also tasted the bitterness in the dressing but in my case I know it is due to the evoo. I had a bit of oil left in my measuring cup and took a bit on my finger to taste and it has the same bitterness as the dressing. Next time I will use avocado oil instead. Btw, my evoo is a freshly opened bottle of organic oil from Costco. It’s not rancid it’s just the way evoo tastes, especially when used in a large proportion in a recipe.5 stars

  2. Amazing recipe! Would be great if you could add filters to your recipes or tags by vitamin attachment – I have the blender, food processor and the cup & bowl set but struggle to think of what do to with each! Especially the little 8oz bowls as some recipes like pesto are impossible even though I would like to make a small batch. 5 stars

  3. Another five star recipe! I don’t know how you do it. I love this dressing recipe. I keep this and your lemon vinaigrette on hand for everything. The avocado dressing is a delicious replacement for sour cream on soups, chili, vegetable dishes, your delicious falafel, fish, sweet potatoes, raw veggies, etc.
It’s really delicious and so easy to make!!5 stars

  4. I love avacados, and love this dressing, use it as a dipping dressing for cucumbers and salad dressing!5 stars

wow! I am loving your site! Got drawn in by YouTube and been on it for hours with one trip to Target for Mason jars, and two trips to grocers and 2 hours washing, peeling, cutting, prepping & storing foods! I have to watch a tutorial on how to use Instagram so I don’t miss anything!

  9. Made this dressing for lunch at work today. I was excited to have an avocado dressing for our salad. I followed all the ingredients and the measurements. It was so smooth but when tried, it was so bitter. I used 1/4 c cilantro and just the leaves. Can you tell me why it was bitter? I feel bad that I threw it away.

    1. Hi Elna – this dressing does have a slightly bitter taste, from the cilantro. If you’d like to reduce that, you can try a different herb or stir in finely chopped herbs after it’s blended.

  10. Love this recipe! Have always wanted to make avocado dressing. Didn’t realize how easy it was it. Thank you for this recipe, Lisa! 5 stars

  11. So delicious I added a tablespoon of sriracha and garlic salt also a full lime and doubled the cilantro 5 stars

  12. Used Basil and Parsley as I don’t like Cilantro. It was very, very bitter. Even after I tried doctoring it up with some fresh lemon Juice and more Salt, it was still barely edible. I’m totally bummed out because I love Avocado and eat it with and on almost everything…3 stars

    1. Hi Moni – sorry you didn’t love this recipe. Yes, herbs can sometimes impart a bitter taste and everyone’s taste palate is different. Hope you like some of my other recipes better!

  13. I have made this several times and used for both spinach and mixed salads. Perfect every time and healthy!5 stars

  14. Thank you for yet another great recipe Lisa.
And thank you for showing one using the small blending bowls as I bought the, but just never use them.
    Best regards,
    Bettina5 stars

    1. Hi Bettina – Small bowls definitely come in handy during these times. Glad you enjoyed this dressing!

  15. I made this with Italian parsley (don’t like cilantro) and was confused about the amount (chopped – whole- ?). In any case, it was very bitter. I added another 1/2 avocado, some Vegenaise, even a little sugar to tone down the bitterness. Any suggestions?

    1. Hi Charles – yes, parsley is generally more bitter than cilantro. I’d recommend basil or another mild herb in the future.

  16. I am a little confused. with the amount of calories per serving. 2 tbsp for 83 calories.
I love avocados an this recipe sounds wonderful. thank you😁

    1. Hi Christine – So happy you enjoyed this dressing :) Pouring this over a vegan taco salad sounds so delicious!

  17. Great tasting salad dressing! I didn’t have any fresh herbs, so I added in a handful of dried basil leaves, rubbed between my palms, doubled the garlic and added water to my liking. Also added a dollop of ranch dressing, although it didn’t really need it. Fantastic on a lettuce and spinach salad with southwestern grilled chicken.5 stars

  18. Absolutely delicious! So easy to make and tastes great with tortilla chips too! Thanks so much! 5 stars

    1. You’re welcome! Thank you for the kind comments and I’m glad you love the dressing! :)

  19. I was looking for an avocado dressing to serve with a baby kale, orange sections, radishes, pickled onions, and pistachio salad. This one was perfect because the salmon burgers I was serving it with had a lemon caper basil aioli. So the basil and avocado combination was perfect! 5 stars

    1. Awesome! Sounds like the perfect combination for sure! I’m glad you enjoyed the recipe Kerri. :)

  20. This sounds so delicious! My husband loves avocado (I’m not a superfan) so this would be great to have onhand for him and his salads.

    1. Yes, definitely! And it’s great because you can make a batch for him for the entire week. :)
