Persimmon Smoothie

After making my Persimmon Caprese I had a few leftover persimmons. And because they were ripe, they needed to be used asap. So I thought, why not add a few spices and whip up a quick smoothie.

In fact, that’s what I tend to do when I have ripe fruit (that’s bordering on over-ripe). Just toss it in my Vitamix with a few other ingredients for a healthy, easy and tasty smoothie – or in this case, a persimmon smoothie breakfast.

Health Benefits of Persimmons

Persimmons are a great fall and winter fruit and chock-full of vitamins and nutrients. You could probably guess by their color, but they’re loaded with beta carotene and rich in vitamin A, C and E.

In fact, they’re so high in vitamin C that one persimmon has about 80% of the recommended daily amount of vitamin c. That means that they’re a great immune boosting fruit and perfect to snack on when cold and flu season hits.

But if you don’t want to snack on them, you could do what I’m recommending today and whip up this Spiced Persimmon Smoothie. Just toss them into your high-powered blender along with a frozen banana and a few other immune boosting spices like ginger and cinnamon.

Which Persimmons to Use?

You could use either fuyu or hachiya persimmons for this recipe. But as I have fuyu persimmons on hand that’s what I’m using today. And I just sliced off the stem and tossed them in whole. But if you opt for hachiya persimmons, make sure they’re super ripe and almost squishy to the touch. Then, cut them open and scoop out the pulp into the blender.

Spiced Persimmon Smoothie is thick, slightly spiced and naturally sweet. It’s a great cold weather smoothie and has all the flavors of the season.

Description

This persimmon smoothie is the perfect smoothie for fall. Made with persimmons, banana, ginger, cinnamon and cloves, it's slightly spiced and deliciously sweet.

Ingredients 
 

  • 2 ripe fuyu persimmons
  • 1 banana, frozen
  • 1 cup almond milk, cashew milk or other nut milk
  • 1/4 tsp ginger
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • pinch of ground cloves

Instructions 

  • Wash the persimmons and slice off the stem. Add them along with all other ingredients to a high-powered blender and blend for one minute.
  • Optionally, garnish the inside of a glass with a thin persimmon slice.

Lisa's Tips

  • Persimmons are usually sold in the supermarket a little under ripe. I always purchase my persimmons and then let them sit in my pantry for a week before using, to ripen and sweeten up.

  1. Even though I only had one very ripe Fuyu, this was great! I added a chopped medjool date and some protein powder. I love the spice combination…it was a nice change from my usual smoothie recipes. Sadly now I need to wait probably another year to make this again when persimmons are back in season!5 stars

  2. This was such a good way to use my leftover persimmons! I was pleasantly surprised by how good this smoothie was. I added an extra frozen banana and a half cup of oats to make it thicker, and I topped it with pumpkin Nuttzo!5 stars

  3. Hi, I am on a smoothie kick lately and my asian friends at work are always bringing me persimmons. So I was looking if I could make it into a smoothie and I found your recipe. Super excited to try it. I just don’t know how to tell what kind of persimmons I have. And they are firm so I guess they’re not ripe enough yet, right?

  4. How do you add ginger to a smoothie? Do you have to peel it or just chop it up and toss it in the blender? My mother always preaches the benefits of ginger to me, so I want to add it to my smoothies as it seems to be a recommended thing, just want to know how specifically.

  5. Persimmons grow wild down here in South Carolina. My mother taught me to love them. I’m always racing the raccoons to the persimmon tree in our neighborhood. but these Fuji persimmons were given to my mom and she couldn’t eat them fast enough so I love your recipe. It means you can actually freeze them before they get over ripe. But the spices make it especially delicious thank you5 stars

  6. We used to have a persimmons tree in our backyard when we lived in the south. My kids called them “per-cinnamons”. I had never though about making them a smoothie, it looks delicious.

    1. I used two Hachiya persimmons. It seemed way too sweet, so I added pecans, almonds, more cinnamon and a pinch of salt. Perfect!
