This homemade strawberry frozen yogurt recipe is beyond easy. It takes just three ingredients and 30 seconds! It’s healthy, delicious, fruity and the perfect quick dessert for hot days. Time to whip up a batch!

Strawberry Frozen Yogurt… Made Right at Home

Most of you know that I love (or I might be slightly obsessed with) my Vitamix. I purchased my first Vitamix years before I ever started Downshiftology as the impetus to adopt healthier eating habits – and it worked.

From smoothies, to soups, to dips, to nut milks and nut butters I pretty much use my Vitamix for everything. It’s been a wise investment because it’s one machine that can do oh, so many things. And that means less appliances and less clutter in the kitchen (which makes my minimalist brain happy).

Did I also mention it can do desserts? It can. And fast. Like today’s super easy homemade frozen yogurt recipe.

Only 3 Ingredients!

Would you believe me if I told you there was just 3 ingredients in this recipe? Yep. It’s just a simple combination of:

  • frozen strawberries
  • yogurt
  • maple syrup (or honey)

That’s it! You can also substitute the strawberries with blueberries, raspberries, kiwi fruit, peaches, or your favorite fruit – so many options.

How To Make Frozen Yogurt (without an Ice Cream Machine)

To make homemade strawberry frozen yogurt just add one cup of yogurt, one pound of frozen strawberries and a little honey or maple syrup to your Vitamix. Then, blend on high and use the tamper to push the frozen berries into the blade. In 30 seconds, you’re done. Yes, it really is that easy.

The frozen yogurt will be the consistency of soft serve at this point or the typical “fro yo” and if you like it soft then eat it right away. But if you’d like to firm it up a little, just add it to a storage container and freeze for an hour or two.

Is Frozen Yogurt Healthy?

Let’s be clear that not all frozen yogurt is created equal. This homemade version is exponentially healthier than anything you can buy in the supermarket or frozen yogurt shop. And that’s because you can control the ingredients and the amount of sugar.

My version of strawberry frozen yogurt has three ingredients – yogurt, strawberries and honey.

For a frozen yogurt shop like Yogurtland (a popular franchise in Southern California) their strawberry frozen yogurt has 16 ingredientsPasteurized and Cultured Skim Milk, Sugar, Strawberries, Dextrose, Whey, Maltodextrin, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Vegetable Mono & Diglycerides, Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Cellulose Gum, Natural Flavors, Ascorbic Acid, Citric Acid and Red 40.

That makes me cringe. Especially as there’s more sugar than actually strawberries in their frozen yogurt. And those fillers, emulsifiers and red food dye – yuck.

Which Type of Yogurt is Best to Use?

I’m using my homemade yogurt in this recipe, but you could use store-bought yogurt as well. Just look for a plain version with no added sugar. I always grab a grass-fed dairy yogurt but regular or Greek yogurt both work, it’s totally up to you.

Can You Make this Frozen Yogurt Recipe Dairy-free and Vegan?

Absolutely! Just use a dairy-free yogurt and swap maple syrup or another sweetener for the honey.

Ingredients 
 

  • 1 cup yogurt, dairy or dairy-free
  • 1 pound frozen strawberries
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup

Instructions 

  • Add the yogurt, honey and strawberries to your Vitamix blender (in that order).
  • Turn the blender on high and use the tamper to push the frozen strawberries into the blades. In 30 seconds you’ll have frozen yogurt.
  • Scoop out the frozen yogurt and serve immediately or transfer to a storage container and freeze.

Lisa’s Tips

  • Be careful not to over-blend the frozen yogurt. It’ll get quite soft if you blend it too long.
  • Have fun making ALL of your favorite frozen yogurt flavors by switching up the frozen fruit. After strawberry, my next favorite is mango – yum!

  1. I have made this several times. I love this recipe. I do add so sugar free strawberry or blueberry jam that I make into it for a swirl. Everyone loves it. I have the same blender. I waited a long time to get it. My husband gave it to me for Christmas one year. I always told him no because they are expensive but so worth it. My daughter has already claimed it when I pass away. Lol. He bought an extra pitcher, the cups, and the smoothie container. It was on Amazon prime. He went above and beyond. Of course, he also got the benefits of it.5 stars

  2. Fantastic with maple syrup and full-Fat Greek yogurt. I used mostly commercially frozen strawberries but also some fresh that I had frozen myself when they were on sale. The Tovolo ice cream containers are great to freeze the batch and with a good ice cream scoop you can satisfy even children who are in love with ice cream trucks. Also wonderful with waffles.5 stars

  6. Sounds and looks delicious. You specify using a Vitamix. (And I see that company sponsored the video.) Will this work in another blender?

    1. Hi Robin – Yes, it can work in other high-powered blenders with strong motors. But you definitely need a tamper to push the frozen ingredients into the blades, in order to blend properly.

  9. Hi Lisa, Ive made this before and we love it. It’s always great when it’s freshly made. However, once it’s been frozen overnight it becomes a block and doesn’t have the creaminess and texture of “ice cream”. I don’t have an ice cream maker but how did you get it soft and scoopable after making a big batch? 

    1. Hi – yes, that is the one bummer of this recipe, it does harden quite a bit after being frozen. To make it scoopable, I just let it thaw at room temperature for a bit. But you’re right in that it’s not as creamy as ice cream, when made with an ice cream maker, unfortunately. But it’s still tasty!

  10. I made this recipe and put it in the freezer for later tonserve to guests. When I removed it from the freezer, it was a solid frozen block of yogurt ice. After leaving out for 30minutes, it was still to hard to spoon out to serve. Should this recipe be made just prior to serving?

    1. I do think this recipe is best in terms of texture just prior to serving (for that soft-serve texture). Otherwise, you do need to take it out plenty of time ahead in order to thaw.

    I love this recipe. The 2:1 ratio of fruits to yogurt works awesome.
    The problem I’m having is when freezing the leftovers in an icecream container it gets frozen solid and take hours to get to a point where I’m able to eat it.
    Any advice on this?

    1. Hi Jose – yes, unfortunately that’s normal. I’d recommend just removing it with enough time to thaw before you’d like to enjoy. :)

  12. How would you recommend making a vanilla or chocolate frozen yogurt? Have you played around with that.

    1. Hi Jessica – I imagine you could just add some cocoa powder to make a chocolate frozen yogurt and vanilla extract for vanilla flavored. But you’d need to freeze the yogurt in small ice cube trays so that you’re starting with something frozen.

    1. Wonderful! You can also maybe try it with a different fruit such as blueberries if you feel like getting a little creative :)

  13. I just made this for the kiddoes with a mix of frozen blueberries, pineapple and dragonfruit as I didn’t have enough of each one on its own. Tasted amazing and didn’t need a sweetener. My 3yo son thought it was better than ice cream!!5 stars

  18. We got our new (refurbished) Vitamix A3500 today. I went shopping today not sure what to get. I happen to buy yogert, an assortment of fresh and frozen fruits, some baby spinach and kale. With plans to go out for dinner, we made thus for dessert. I used about a tablespoon of real maple syrup. This was absolutely delicious. I’ll look through your website for more recipes.     I made your strawberry yogurt a few days ago using honey, and it was delicious! Our kids loved it. I used our Ninja because I don’t have a Vitamix. I had to do it in two batches then stirred it up and put it in the freezer. We made it today with frozen pineapple, and oh my goodness. It was sweet and so refreshing.   24. I made this strawberry frozen yogurt on the weekend and it was amazing. I don’t have a Vitamix but have ninja 5 blade blender and it took me less than 5 minutes to make. Even my parents loved it had them over for dinner and made it as a dessert, I used greek yogurt and fresh strawberry that I’ve frozen the day before.
    I will be definitely doing this recipe often this summer very refreshing.

  25. On my first attempt, my vitamix (1.2L) stop hafway -I think I overload it. But I still  manage to have frozen yougurt with a few chunky strawberries ?. On my second attempt, I use half of the amount and my frozen yougurt is a bit on a soft side…but still yummy. Thanks for the recipe. 5 stars

    1. Most ordinary blenders are likely not powerful enough (and you need the tamper to push into the blades), but it should definitely work in a food processor. Let me know how it goes! :) x

    1. You can, but that would be more similar to freezing a smoothie so it will be more dense frozen. Blending the frozen berries helps to keep it a little more fluffy. :)

  30. Hey, I have vitamix but sometimes afraid to use with the frozen fruits? but i would like ask you do you always use 2L jug . I think to buy 1L for small portions yogurt or ive creams…but dont know if is good idea , have three kids and love my vitamix:)
