10 Ways Healthy People Stay Healthy (and Happy!)

You know when you see that person who just exudes wellness. Everything about them is vibrant. Their skin is glowing, they have a spring in their step and their smile just has more sparkle. They’re not only healthy, but abundantly happy.
And who couldn’t use a little extra glow or sparkle in their day? A little more radiance? Truth be told, it’s not about miracle creams or exotic detoxes. Healthy people have just learned a few simple, daily habits, that anyone can begin to practice. It’s how they not only get healthy, but stay healthy.
I’ve been reminded of these this week as I’ve been relaxing, reflecting and reinvigorating at an unbelievable health retreat in Bali. More on that to come! But today, let’s dig in…
1. They wake up feeling grateful
Healthy people realize that each day your heart is pumping is a good day. Whether they have a daily affirmation or are just thankful for the blue bird outside their window, they wake up with a sense of gratitude.
2. They realize each day is a new opportunity
Healthy people know that whatever happened yesterday is already in the past, but today is a new day. An opportunity for a do-over, a restart or a new approach to life.
3. They prioritize moderation over extremes
Healthy people know that fad diets, deprivation and extremes are short lived and impede long-lasting wellness. They prioritize small steps and simple tweaks that slowly improve their health and happiness.
4. They get restful sleep
Healthy people know that sleep is how the body heals and rejuvenates. They prioritize a solid 7-8 hours each night and let the body’s interconnected systems work their magic.
5. They eat real food
Healthy people eat food as mother nature intended – real, organic, grass-fed, pasture-raised and as close to it’s natural state as possible. They view food as nourishment – fuel to keep their internal motor running clean.
6. They surround themselves with positive people
Healthy people know that it’s easier to make lemonade out of lemons when you’ve got friends helping you work your lemonade stand. They know that positivity is infectious and ensure those closest to them have a similar outlook.
7. They make time for human interaction
Healthy people get out from behind their computers, text messages and phone calls. They know there’s no replacement for hugs, physical touch and in-person connectedness.
8. They stay active
Healthy people move every day. They know it’s not about stringent workouts or trendy classes at the gym, but rather daily activity that gets the blood flowing. Outdoor activity and connecting with mother nature is even better.
9. They make self-care a priority
Healthy people know that self-care is a non-negotiable. They schedule it on their calendars as they would a business meeting or doctors appointment. They spend at least 20 minutes a day for themselves, to recharge and refresh.
10. They don’t take life too seriously
Healthy people realize that life never turns out as planned – for any of us. They laugh at life’s chaotic moments, idiosyncrasies and less than stellar moments. Because starting back at square one, they realize that tomorrow is a new day and a clean slate.
