This classic mint julep is the perfect spring and summer cocktail for days spent outdoors. Think cookouts, Sunday brunches, and of course, the Kentucky Derby!

Why You’ll Love It
- Made with just three ingredients. All you need is bourbon, a sweetener, and fresh mint. It’s crisp, refreshing, and not overly sweet.
- It’s classic and foolproof. Think bar-quality cocktail at home. I promise, no special skills are required!
- Perfect for entertaining. Whether it’s a summer holiday like the 4th of July, a birthday, or a casual get-together, it’s an easy cocktail that always impresses.
While I’ve never been to the Kentucky Derby (I’m hoping to go next year!), I do love to watch it on TV and make a simple mint julep at home. This cocktail was made famous by the horse race, and the contrast of bright, fresh mint and smooth bourbon feels so simple, yet so festive. It’s kind of like a mojito, but a little more elevated.
At the racetrack, the cocktail is served in frosty pewter cups, piled high with pebbled ice. At home, I simply use crushed ice and julep or highball glasses. My friends always comment on how pretty it looks, and before I know it, someone will ask me to make another round. It’s definitely an elegant, celebratory cocktail, but in my house, we’re usually just celebrating any time the weather warms up!
Mint Julep Ingredients

- Kentucky bourbon: I always use a good-quality bourbon, since it’s the main flavor of the drink. But, you don’t need anything overly expensive; a mid-range bottle will do! Just something smooth with notes of vanilla and caramel for a classic mint julep flavor.
- Sweetener: While simple syrup is used in the classic version, I love using honey for a softer, more natural sweetness. It blends really nicely with the mint and bourbon! Just make sure it’s well mixed so it doesn’t sink to the bottom.
- Mint leaves: Grab a big bundle! You’ll need them for muddling and garnishing. And for this drink, you can never go wrong with a teeny bit extra mint.
- Crushed ice: If you have a crushed ice maker, perfect! If not, add ice cubes to a zip-lock bag, press out the air, and seal it. Then, wrap the bag in a clean kitchen towel and use a rolling pin or meat mallet to gently crush the ice.

How To Make a Mint Julep

First, muddle the mint. Add the mint leaves and honey (or simple syrup) to a julep or highball glass. Then, gently muddle the leaves to release the mint oils. Don’t crush the leaves as they can become bitter if you do! I also use a muddler for this. If you don’t have one, you can use the end of a wooden spoon handle or the back of a fork.

Next, fill the glass and garnish. Add the bourbon and give everything a quick stir. Then fill the glass with crushed ice and stir again until the outside of the glass gets nice and frosty. Pile more crushed ice on top to create that classic dome shape. Then, finish with a generous sprig of fresh mint.
Common Questions
Yes, this is one of the most important parts of a mint julep! Crushed ice chills the drink quickly and creates that frosty texture we all love. It also slightly dilutes the bourbon as you sip, which keeps the drink smooth.
In my opinion, a classic mint julep is already so good and a classic for a reason. But if you want to make a gentle variation, you can muddle in a few berries, such as blackberries or strawberries, for a sweet, summery layer.
If you’re avoiding alcohol or have kiddos who want to join in on the fun, the key is replacing the bourbon with something that still gives a little depth. I’ve used brewed black tea before, and it still tastes so refreshing!

Behind The Scenes

If you’re feeling really festive and hosting a Kentucky Derby watch party, it’s fun to serve this cocktail up in julep glasses. Though more often than not, I serve this up in my standard rocks or highball glasses. It’s delicious either way! Though pro-tip, do let some of the ice melt, so the drink isn’t so strong. 😉
