Even though I eat a healthy, real-food centric diet most of the time, I love to periodically hit the reset button with Whole30—the popular plan in which you eliminate all grains, legumes, soy, dairy, alcohol, added sugars, artificial sweeteners and most processed foods for 30 days (check out the official Whole30 rules here).
It helps me hone in on the nourishing whole foods that I know are going to serve my body, while eliminating the ones that promote inflammation, mess with my mental health, and aggravate existing health conditions.
But while crafting Whole30 meals is generally pretty simple if you have a few good recipes up your sleeve (check out my delicious Whole30 Recipes and Whole30 Food List), snacks can be tricky because so many on-the-go options contain funky additives or added sweeteners that aren’t compliant with the program. Even things you think are totally acceptable, like your favorite trail mix, may contain some added honey or maple syrup—and that’s a no go!
On one hand, the strictness of the program is sort of great—it forces you to prep many of your own Whole30 snacks such as sliced fruits and veggies, ants on a log (celery with almond butter and raisins), hard boiled eggs, deviled eggs, guacamole, cucumber bites and plantain chips.
It also forces you to become vigilant about reading ingredient lists on packaged food items and recognizing non-compliant ingredients.
On the other hand, when you’re a week or two into Whole30 and experiencing a moment of debilitating hanger, the last thing you probably want to do is pore over ingredient lists to see if something constitutes a Whole30 approved snack—especially if you’re short on time.
So, for those inevitable moments (yes, even I have them!), keeping a few pre-made compliant bites on hand is key to avoiding a slip up.
