This creamy chocolate collagen smoothie satisfies all your chocolate cravings and gives you a health boost with collagen peptides. Made with just 5 simple ingredients, it’s quick, nourishing, and delicious!
Why You’ll Love This Collagen Smoothie
I’m hands-down a smoothie girl. And while I usually make my green smoothie most mornings, this chocolate collagen smoothie is my favorite way to switch things up and sneak in extra collagen. It’s creamy, chocolatey, and loaded with health benefits (for healthy skin, joints, and muscles!) thanks to collagen peptides. Collagen naturally diminishes with age, so as I get older, I’m always looking for ways to sneak a bit more into my diet and get that glow from the inside out! Here’s what else I love about this smoothie recipe:
- It’s a healthy sweet treat. Made with just 5 whole food ingredients and no added sugar, it satisfies my chocolate craving in a nourishing way.
- It’s quick and easy. Just toss everything into a blender and it’s ready in seconds.
Chocolate Collagen Smoothie Ingredients
- Milk: Use any milk you like, dairy or dairy-free. Almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk all work great here.
- Banana: A simple frozen banana adds natural sweetness and makes the smoothie extra creamy and chilled without needing ice.
- Almond Butter: Nut butter adds a great boost of healthy fats, protein, and a hint of nuttiness. It also makes the smoothie even more satisfying.
- Raw Cacao Powder: This is what gives the smoothie its rich chocolate flavor, plus it’s packed with antioxidants and minerals.
- Collagen Powder: I use Vital Proteins Unflavored Collagen Peptides, but their Marine Collagen or Dark Chocolate & Blackberry Collagen Peptides are great options too. Especially if you want to boost the flavor or prefer a pescatarian-friendly version.

How to Make It
The great thing about this smoothie is that it couldn’t be easier to make! Just toss the milk, banana, almond butter, cacao powder, and collagen powder into your high-powered blender and blend for about 30 seconds. That’s it! It’s super easy to make this sweet, creamy, and chocolatey smoothie with a bonus health kick.
Common Questions
Unflavored collagen peptides usually have little to no taste, especially when blended with flavorful ingredients like cacao powder or fruit.
Yes! Feel free to add superfoods like chia seeds, flaxseeds, or other adaptogens depending on your goals. I love to sprinkle ground flaxseeds for extra fiber.

Equipment
- Vitamix Blender My favorite blender for smoothies!
Ingredients
- 2 cups milk (dairy or dairy-free)
- 1 frozen banana
- 2 tablespoons almond butter
- ¼ cup raw cacao powder
- 2 scoops collagen peptides
Instructions
- Blend it all up. Add the milk, banana, almond butter, cacao powder, and collagen peptides to a high-powered blender. Blend until smooth.
- Serve. Pour the smoothie into two glasses and enjoy.
Lisa’s Tips
- I like to use either the Vital Proteins collagen peptides or the Vital Proteins marine collagen powder.
- For the cacao powder, I always recommend using an organic raw cacao powder for greater antioxidants.
- I’m using a light coconut milk (from a can) in this recipe and my homemade almond butter. If you use a different non-dairy milk, that will alter the nutritional profile.

I absolutely love this shake. It brought my love for chocolate shakes back. I have made it exactly how the recipe says and I have also added organic hemp seeds. So good
Thrilled to hear you loved this chocolate collagen smoothie, Nards!
Simple and delicious, with enough protein for one meal!
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I used an unsweetened chocolate almond milk to enhance the chocolate aspect and it was very yummie!
Perfect! Nothing like a double dose of chocolate. ;)
I made the chocolate collagen smoothie with coconut milk and frozen berries. It was delicious!
Will definitely make it again….tomorrow!
Awesome! So happy you enjoyed it, Maureen.
Thank you for this healthy and delicious smoothie recipe. I am not creative and struggle with putting foods together. Working on weight-loss goal. This is encouraging 🙌
You’re welcome, Marie! I hope you enjoy this smoothie as part of your routine.
I made your Chocolate Collagen Smoothie. It was delicious. I have not used a banana in it before but was a nice touch.
It definitely makes it extra creamy. Glad you enjoyed it, Georgia!
I love this smoothie! I actually add a bunch of spinach too–you don’t taste it, but get the extra nutrient and fiber boost.
Spinach is always a great addition to any smoothie!
I use purely inspired collagen peptides and tried your recipe it was delicious
So glad you enjoyed it, Linda!
I’m allergic to all tree nuts. What would you replace the almond butter with?
Hi Margie – you could use any seed butter, like sunflower seed butter.
Do you have to drink birth glasses of the smoothie?
Hi Lauranne – no, you can save half in a mason jar in the fridge, then reshake it all up to enjoy the next day.
Delicious, easy to make, and such a refreshing smoothie!
Glad you’re loving this chocolate collagen smoothie, Jennifer!
How long can bananas stay in the freezer? And if they turn brown can they still be used?
Hi Josephine – You can store bananas in the freezer for up to 3 months!
Delicious! Perfect! And helps me eat more protein, which I struggle to do since I don’t enjoy large portions of meat.
Hi Laura – This is a great way to do it!
Alternatives to bananas? Im actually allergic to banana if you can believe it. Avocado as well (apparently they both have a certain enzyme I don’t tolerate). Thanks!
Excited to try this one soon! I’ve been integrating the VitalProteins collagen into my diet this past year, and am very happy with it. Was also wondering if you would recommend a particular brand for a collagen-based skin product to reduce and prevent face wrinkles? Thank you!
Do you have a suggest to replace the banana in this smoothie? I have an allergy to Bananas, and would love to try this recipe.
You can try using avocado instead, just note that it will remove some of the sweetness. So, feel free to add a bit more sweetener if you’d like.
This smoothie is unbelievably good. I ran out of bananas one day so I used a chunk of apple and added protein powder too and It was delicious. I love this drink.
Glad you loved this smoothie Salome!
Hi there,
I’ve noticed that all of your chocolate recipes are made with cacao powder. I am wondering if you have ever worked directly with cacao beans in your Vitamix? I have a melange as well as a Vitamix Ascent 2300. I purchased it for its ability to work with hot beverages and soups (since cacao is a hot beverage with the consistency of soup). I would love your opinion before I try working with cacao nibs. Thank you!
I want to say this is one of my favorite recipes but honestly all of Lisa’s recipes are bomb diggity. This smoothie is a really great way to “treat yo’ self” while getting in your collagen. I’m recovering from knee surgery & the added collagen has been a must for recovery. I usually make a smoothie in the morning before I head out for physical therapy.
Wow, glad to hear you’ve found a winning chocolate smoothie recipe Camilla!
I’ve been looking for different ways to have my collagen besides coffee every in the mornings.. and I’m so glad I found your recipe! I used the so delicious coconut milk brand and it taste so much better then any Starbucks coffee I’ve tried. Thank you!
Happy to hear you love this smoothie Amy! It’s a great way to sneak in collagen powder :)
Hi Lisa.
I am new to smoothies and I wanted to know if I can add both collagen protein and protein powder and 2 tbsp of oats would be too much protein. I am interested in using this a meal replacement smoothie. I also wanted to add a quarter of an avacado for good fat and feeling full to keep the sugar cravings in check. I am in my 50’s and I want to lose a little weight and feel more healthy.
Hi Cheryl – I’m not a doctor so can’t comment on the appropriate amount of protein for you. But I’d check with yours! :)
I feel like I am totally cheating with this smoothie! LOL. :) On a dreary day with smoke filled skies, I thank you for inspiring me to continue on my path to health.
Haha, it sure is delicious, isn’t it? I’m glad you loved the recipe, Stacy!
Hi Lisa, I make many of your recipes and I just made this one last night.
Thank you for sharing recipes that help my health issues. I really appreciate it.
I would like to know if I can substitute anything else for the collagen protein As I am not tolerating it well at all?
Best wishes.
Hi Shamima – I’m happy you’re loving all my recipes! You could try a different brand. Sometimes it might just be a certain ingredient in the mix that doesn’t agree with your body. Good luck!
I definitely want to try this smoothie! However, is there a substitue for almond butter?
Hi Dolores – you can use any nut butter in this recipe.
Yummy!!!!!! I used cashew milk and vanilla collagen, because that’s what I had and it was super tasty. I haven’t tried Vital Proteins collagen powder yet. I’ll have to add it to my shopping list!
Hi Sasha – So glad you enjoyed this smoothie! You’ll definitely have to add the collagen powder if you have it on hand :)
This was pretty good, better than expected as I usually do not like frozen banana. Next time I will chill, or semi-freeze, the milk to make it a little colder. I also added .75 tsp of erythritol. It was good without it but tastier with it. Overall, I liked it more than I thought I would.
Hi Juanita – I’m glad this smoothie came out better than expected! The frozen banana is to make the smoothie a little bit creamier :)
Made this today and was even more delicious than I expected!! It tasted almost like a milkshake! I didn’t have any coconut milk so I used unsweetened almond milk. Delish! Will be making many more times.
Hi Shayla – This smoothie is like a chocolate dream isn’t it? Almond milk is a great alternative as well, but glad you loved this recipe! Look out for more smoothie recipes coming soon :)
So this sounds INCREDIBLE. One problem… I hate banana! Is there a good replacement?
You could use any sweet fruit, such as apple or pear as well. :)
I made this, but failed to snap a pic. I used 1 cup Premier Protein Chocolate rather than the Almond Milk I had on hand with 1 tblsp of Peanut Butter because that’s all I had on hand. I only made 1 serving, hence those measurements, but I did use 1 frozen banana and a small amount of mixed berries and I will definitely make again tomorrow! It was delicious!
Awesome, so glad you enjoyed the Chocolate Smoothie with you’re own spin :)
I ordered my collagen from Amazon and its arriving today…can’t to try it. Is it ok to have collagen every day or is it better to space it out during the week? I am planning on putting it in my Golden Milk as well.
Yes, you can have it every day. :)
Excellent
Thanks Deborah! :)
Oops I forgot to add I used Almond milk as had & fresh Banana, Cacao & Collagen Thick tasty & oozed Chocolate!!

Thanks Albert! Hope you enjoy the recipe!
Yes, this. Thank you! I’ve been reading more about collagen and how to incorporate it into our diets, so you had me at (1) your super simple explanation and (2) chocolate. How often are you adding a collagen supplement to your diet? I want to know all the things!
Haha. And I’m happy to share all the things! ;) I tend to add collagen at least every other day to something – a smoothie, my matcha tea, chia pudding, etc. Make sure to check out this post for more info as well: https://downshiftology.com/what-is-collagen/
So interesting! I had no idea you could put collagen in a smoothie. It’s definitely in my face masks, lol. I need to find this stuff and do my homework, clearly!
Yes! And taking it internally is great for so many things. Make sure to check out this post for more info: https://downshiftology.com/what-is-collagen/
Oh my goodness this sounds delicious! I am so guilty of throwing a candy bar into the basket at the supermarket checkout! Thank you for the collagen education too, I learned a lot! Pinned to try!
Oh, you and me both. ;) But now you have this much healthier alternative!
I love a post run chocolate shake and this looks like a great way to give it a bit of a boost.
