Italian seasoning is one of my favorite herby blends that I always have stored in my pantry. It’s easy to make with six dried herbs and perfect for giving meats, seafood, and veggies incredible Italian flavor.
Why You’ll Love This Italian Seasoning
If there’s one seasoning blend I always have in my spice drawer, it’s this Italian seasoning. It’s herbaceous, aromatic, and adds the perfect punch of Italian flavor to classic recipes like meatballs, stuffed peppers, Zuppa Toscana, and roast chicken. You can also make the best homemade Italian dressing with this seasoning and olive oil! Sure, you can buy Italian seasoning at the store, but here’s why I always make my own seasonings:
- There are no fillers or additives. You can never be too sure what other ingredients store-bought seasoning blends have.
- It stores well. Even though it will last up to one year, it always gets used up quickly with how much Mediterranean cooking I do!
Italian Seasoning Ingredients
- Dried oregano, thyme, basil, rosemary, and marjoram: This is the essential mix for a classic Italian seasoning that’s beautifully earthy and aromatic.
- Dried sage: Although this is optional, it adds a grounding herbal note and is especially nice if you plan to use the seasoning for poultry or stuffing. Make sure to use rubbed sage instead of ground sage—it has more texture and won’t sink to the bottom of the jar!

How To Make Italian Seasoning
- Mix the spices. Add all the spices to a small mixing bowl and stir them together.
- Use immediately or store away. Use this Italian seasoning as you make it, or store it in an airtight container for future use. I usually double the seasoning and store it in these glass spice jars using a kitchen funnel. It will last up to one year (assuming your dried herbs were fresh to begin with).
Ways To Use Italian Seasoning
- Sprinkle on roasted vegetables such as roasted broccoli, roasted potatoes, or air fryer carrots.
- Season meats and fish such as this herb-baked chicken breast, grilled chicken, or baked cod. I also use it on my Italian sheet pan chicken breast meal (love one-pan dinners!).
- Stir into simple soups and stews for extra depth, such as this lentil soup, vegetable soup, or cabbage soup.
More Homemade Seasonings
- Taco Seasoning: Make “Taco Tuesdays” extra special.
- Fajita Seasoning: This works on any fajita protein.
- Everything Bagel Seasoning: Perfect for roasted veggies or breakfast.
- Brisket Dry Rub: The perfect sweet and smoky flavor.

This is a very tasty, easy to make blend! I love the idea of having my own Italian seasoning available in the spice drawer, but have never wanted to purchase it because I already have all the “parts” in my spice drawer. Thanks, Lisa!
Homemade seasonings are the way to go! Enjoy, Mo.
I love this recipe. I find a lot of Italian seasonings in my country have chilli in them and I can’t eat chilli. 🌶️ this is a simple flavourful balance and it’s perfect. Thanks for helping me get what I need without the chilli.
Glad you found the perfect homemade Italian seasoning recipe (that doesn’t include chili!), Joey!
