This kiwi smoothie is your friendly reminder to eat more kiwis! They’re packed with nutrients and fiber, and when combined with yogurt, spinach, and chia seeds, this drink is a true morning powerhouse.

Why You’ll Love My Kiwi Smoothie
- A delicious way to add more kiwis to your diet. They’re a nutritional powerhouse loaded with fiber and Vitamin C.
- Even more nutrients. The spinach, banana, yogurt, and chia seeds add even more vitamins and nutrients, with additional protein and fiber that turn it into a true breakfast smoothie.
- Quick and easy. Which is what we always want for busy mornings!
I often start my mornings with a breakfast smoothie, especially after a good workout. It’s my favorite way to kickstart a busy day! And while I naturally gravitate towards my “famous” Downshiftology brown smoothie or green smoothie, I also like switching it up.
I eat kiwis regularly every week, they’re a favorite of mine for easily digestible fiber. And while I often eat them by simply slicing them in half and scooping out the flesh, I also love to toss them in the blender and quickly whip up this breakfast smoothie. It’s a riff on my peach breakfast smoothie, and equally delicious!
Plus, when you toss in some spinach, and chia seeds… it’s such an underrated high-fiber breakfast. So if you’re in the same boat as me and trying to increase your fiber intake, I highly recommend this smoothie!
Key Ingredients You’ll Need

- Milk: You can use dairy or dairy-free, so feel free to choose your favorite milk! I personally like using almond milk or cashew milk.
- Plain yogurt: I love using Greek yogurt in smoothies. But this time, I tested it with plain, regular yogurt and loved how it tasted with the kiwi for a more balanced flavor and thinner consistency (keep in mind the chia seeds will make it thick as well).
- Baby spinach: I always love tossing in a few handfuls to any smoothie for extra fiber and anti-inflammatory properties. The more greens the better!
- Kiwi: I’m using green kiwis in this recipe, but golden kiwis works as well. Fun fact: both types have fiber and Vitamin C, but green kiwis have a bit more fiber and golden kiwis have a bit more Vitamin C.
- Banana: This makes it extra creamy!
- Chia seeds: One of my favorite ways to add more fiber in the morning.

Ingredient Substitutions
- Prefer using Greek yogurt? That’s completely fine! Just be aware the smoothie will be a bit tangier and extra creamy, since the chia seeds naturally make this smoothie thicker.
- If you can’t have bananas, I have a few options. Fresh or frozen mango is perfect for adding a creamy texture and sweet flavor, similar to a banana. Avocado is another easy, creamy alternative, but you only need a little, about ¼ slice. I might also add a bit of honey to bring back some sweetness.

How To Make This Kiwi Breakfast Smoothie
Simply add all the ingredients above into a high-powered blender (I love my Vitamix!) and blend on high until perfectly smooth and creamy. Then, pour the smoothie into a Mason jar, stir in the chia seeds, secure the lid tightly, and give it a good shake!
Lisa’s Tip: While you can blend the chia seeds in the blender with the other ingredients, I prefer to stir them into the glass, after it’s blended. Here’s why!
- Whole chia seeds will gel to a thicker consistency that’s great for a breakfast smoothie. If you’ve made my chia pudding or overnight oats, you understand this thicker consistency! Just let the smoothie sit for a few minutes to allow the seeds to gel, then stir or shake it again before enjoying.
- It’s my way of avoiding those hard-to-wash crevices inside my blender. The small seeds will naturally stick!

Kiwi Breakfast Smoothie (High-Fiber Smoothie)
Description
Equipment
Ingredients
- 1 cup milk (dairy or dairy-free)
- ½ cup plain yogurt (dairy or dairy-free)
- 1 cup baby spinach
- 2 kiwifruit, skin removed
- ½ medium banana
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
Instructions
- Blend together. Add the milk, yogurt, spinach, kiwifruit, and banana to a high-powered blender. Blend on high until smooth and creamy.
- Stir in chia seeds. Pour the kiwi smoothie in a glass or Mason jar. For a glass, stir in the chia seeds. For a Mason jar, add the chia seeds, secure the lid, and shake until well combined. Let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes, to allow the chia seeds to gel. Then, stir or shake again before enjoying it!
Lisa’s Tips
- I like to add my chia seeds after blending (see my notes above), but you can always add them earlier and blend them up with the other ingredients. It’s entirely up to you!

I am allergic to chia seeds, will flax seeds or hemp hearts work?
Hi Jennifer – Yes, you could stir in either of those items at the end as well. Enjoy!
Thank you so much for sharing your talents. I started volunteering at our local jail, teaching a cooking class to the chemically addicted. I have been able to share so many of your recipes with these individuals. We love your recipes at home and with my class. Looking forward to adding this breakfast smoothie to my morning routine.
Hi Cheryl – I love how you teach a cooking class there, and that a few of my recipes have made it. Excited to hear everyone’s thoughts on this smoothie!
Loving your recipes.
I lost my appetite with having breast and later bowel cancer.
My appetite is beginning to come back, ever so slowly though.
So thank you.
Hi Jo – I’m so glad you’re enjoying my recipes! And that’s wonderful news that your appetite is coming back. Sending you healthy healing vibes for continued positive progress! x
This recipe dropped into my inbox at the right moment – I was trying to find ways to add fiber to my morning smoothies! I am not a big fan of chia seeds, so I used flax seeds instead; I also added some neutral-flavored protein powder as I’m trying to target 30g of protein per meal.
Spot-on! This version enters my rotation now :)
Woot! Happy to hear this kiwi smoothie is a winner for you. Thanks, Malika!
This is delicious, perfect blend of sweet as well as the right amount of tart. The next time I will add a scoop of unflavored protein powder to help my protein intake.
Thanks Lisa
So glad you enjoyed it, Linda! And yes, a scoop of protein powder is a great addition.
I’m just coming up to my last chemo and have been having a hard time finding a smoothie that I like. This email has come at a good time!!!! Thank you! I will give this a try!
I hope you enjoy it, Sara! And sending best wishes to you as well on your recovery!
I’m going to make this, Lisa, I am having extensive dental work done so I will be living on healthy smoothies for a while and very soft dinners, yoghurt and fruit.
Hi Heather – It sounds like this smoothie is going to be perfect for you then! Hope your recovery is quick!
I want to try the Kiwi smoothie. I don’t like the taste of banana, but wondered if you actually taste it or it just adds sweetness? I can substitute as you suggested, but bananas are easier.
Hi Suzanne – I don’t really taste it, it’s more to add sweetness and creaminess. Enjoy!
I am going to replace the banana with frozen avocado for creaminess and I will probably add monkfuit sweetener.
Can you make this with a regular blender?
Hi Maureen – Yes, this one is fine in a regular blender. Enjoy!
